Why is there a Blue Whale in Catoosa, Oklahoma?

Stopping for a walk in Catoosa, Oklahoma

The blue whale of Catoosa has been attracting families since 1972 when it was created by zoologist Hugh S. Davis. The structure was given as a surprise anniversary present for his wife Zelta, who collected whale figurines. The whale sits in a large pond that was originally spring fed. The attraction is just off Historic Route 66 in Catoosa, OK. The famous icon is made of concrete and includes a wooden deck that leads visitors inside. The fins once served as slides leading into the pond where it rests.

The Blue Whale Today

At one time, the pond was used for fishing as well as swimming. As time passed, use of the pond stopped and the whale fell into disrepair. Recent efforts have brought the whale back from certain demise. Luckily, visitors can once again view the large concrete structure, though swimming in the pond is now prohibited. The interior includes a narrow ladder allowing guests a second floor view from inside the massive concrete beast.

Mr. Davis added to his roadside attraction later opening A.R.K. (Animal Reptile Kingdom) which featured a wide array of reptiles collected from across the globe. The structure still stands today, though the reptiles are long gone.

Overall Review

Overall, the restoration of the location has made great strides from the disrepair the location had endured. The restrooms are certainly not ideal, and some of the signage has been vandalized. There are signs of improvement surrounding the area and we look forward to seeing additional restoration in the future. Check out more photos from our adventure to the Blue Whale of Catoosa below!
